Oscars Red Carpet Coverage

February 23rd, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

Today Hulu got a recap of all the Oscars fashion with E!’s fashion cop, Debbie Matenopoulos. She’s the host of Fashion Police: The 2009 Academy Awards, which premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on E!. Her blow-by-blow account of her favorite looks — plus a few misses — is below.

“The Oscars were really fun last night. Everyone pulls out all the stops and it was really hard to find any real misses. But I did have some favorite looks. I love, love, loved Anne Hathaway in all those beautiful, big sequins. They had a fish scale effect that was reminiscent of Marion Cotillard’s dress from last year. From the sequins to the bodice and the strapless style, I thought it was lovely. I just love her look — it’s distinct, that pale skin and red lip.”

Taraji Henson, though, blew me away on the red carpet. She’s looked great all season, but this look took the cake. Her dress fit her perfectly and the detailing — it looked almost unfinished at the bottom of each layer, but it was very tailored. And she paired it with a gorgeous necklace. It was to die for, from that clutch right down to her shoes.”

Evan Rachel Wood looked great. She had a look that’s difficult to pull off, with pale skin, hair that’s the same color as her dress, and a lip that pops. It’s not something just anyone can pull together.”

“I loved Kate Winslet‘s hair last night — it was very futuristic, but I just felt it was not her best dress. She’s been on point the rest of the season. I think she raised the bar for herself this year, and I don’t think she lived up to my expectations this time.”

Vanessa Hudgens never looked better. Her dress was fun, elegant and fit well — it fit her personality. It was elegant and age appropriate.”

“I just didn’t like Jessica Biel’s look. I don’t know what she’s going through right now; we all have our own personal pain. But don’t take it on your fashion! It’s like she is having an identity crisis right before our eyes. The dress she wore — she tried to do Eva Longoria at the Golden Globes, but Jessica didn’t manage to wear it here. The apron at the front is popular right now, but in this case it was a trend gone wrong. And she wore open-toed black shoes that looked like Dyeables from David’s Bridal. They just didn’t match the white dress. And her hair and makeup looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. ”

“I could have done without the skullcap on Philip Seymour Hoffman. It’s rumored that he’s done something with his hair for a movie role and needed to cover it up. I get that, but why not wear a fedora or something?”

“On the other hand, Robert Downey, Jr., looked amazing. It was jarring to see him look so clean-cut. I’ve gotten used to him wearing funny glass, spiky hair or big bowties, but last night he looked youthful and rested. He looked 10 years younger.”

Sean Penn looked amazing. I loved the black on black on black. I think he had a diagonal stripe on his black tie. And [his wife] Robin Wright — wow! Sean won big even before the Oscars. They could easily have been the night’s best couple.”

Thanks to Debbie Matenopoulos for sharing her Oscars favorites. For highlights of the Hollywood’s biggest night, check out E!’s Best of 2009 Academy Awards Coverage featuring red carpet celebrity interviews.

Grammy Awards: Red Carpet Highlights

February 9th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

The big winners at the 2009 Grammy Awards included Coldplay, John Mayer and Jennifer Hudson, but who won big on the red carpet? With Hulu’s spotlight on the Red Carpet at the Grammys, you can put together your own best-dressed list.

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus seemed to plan their red carpet looks: the two went for black gowns with diamond drop earrings. Meanwhile, Katy Perry called on her inner “Material Girl” with a light pink gown.

The night was full of risk-takers, as well: Paula Abdul appeared in a canary yellow Basil Soda gown, while “American Boy” singer Estelle channeled Judy Jetson in a silver number.

You can find more Grammys Red Carpet coverage on our Red Carpet Events spotlight page, from T.I. and http://www.hulu.com/watch/56710/award-season-grammys-2009-jamie-foxx>Jamie Foxx to Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood.

So which stars made your best- and worst-dressed list? Share your thoughts in our discussions area, or leave your comments on the blog.

SAG Awards: Red Carpet Highlights

January 26th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

Hollywood was out in full force for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, with awards given to the cast of Slumdog Millionaire and Heath Ledger for his work in Dark Knight. But to fashionistas, the real winners of the night were spotted on the red carpet. You can find red carpet highlights from our partners at E! and TV Guide on Hulu’s Red Carpet Events Spotlight page. Among the videos, E! has a play-by-play of the best moments from the red carpet — exclusively available on Hulu — including interviews with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Steve Carell and more.

Best Supporting Actress winner Kate Winslet (for The Reader) was stunning in an electric blue Narciso Rodriguez gown accented by Chopard earrings.

Among the many actresses wearing white last night, Rachel Getting Married‘s Anne Hathaway pulled it off best, wearing a white Azzaro gown accented with crystals along the neckline and waist.

And perhaps the most daring look we saw last night came courtesy of 30 Rock‘s Jane Krakowski, who also accepted the award for best ensemble in a comedy series on behalf of the 30 Rock cast. Her speech — part send-up of Tracey Morgan’s acceptance at the Golden Globes — was also fun: “An ensemble has to be better than the sum of its parts,” she said, “because some of the people here are just weirdos we picked up off the street.”

What was your favorite look of the night? You can share your thoughts in our discussion boards, or comment on our blog.

Red Carpet Coverage from the Golden Globes

January 12th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

You can now find red carpet coverage from last night’s Golden Globes on Hulu. With previews of the events leading up to the big event, red carpet interviews, fashion recaps, and winners’ reactions, our spotlight on Red Carpet Events: The Golden Globes offers the best moments of the evening.

With this being the return of the Golden Globes — the big party was cancelled last year due to the writers’ strike — we turned to fashion expert Lawrence Zarian for his take on the night’s trends, and who wore them best. Zarian is the host of TV Guide Network’s The Fashion Team and is the network’s official Red Carpet fashion expert for the 2009 Award Season. You can catch him on the TV Guide Network as a fashion panelist on the Golden Globe Awards Fashion Wrap with Lisa Rinna, premiering Monday, January 12 at 8/7c.

According to Zarian, the look of the night was slicked-back hair. “It goes day to night; office to opera — and it takes a perfect picture,” he said. Which divas wore it best? “Eva Longoria Parker was absolutely stunning, but you also saw the look on Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek.”

We also saw a lot of off-the-shoulder dresses at the Golden Globes, from one-shoulder styles to halters and strapless designs on the likes of Anne Hathaway, Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslet. In addition, purple and aubergine turned heads on the red carpet. “Black is back, in a good way. Kate Winslet was pretty spectacular,” Zarian said. “And Jennifer Lopez was a goddess in gold Marchesa.”

In terms of jewelry, the focus was on the ear and the starlets proved last night that the earring doesn’t have to match the gown, Zarian said. Bold earrings ruled the red carpet, with Kate Beckinsale and Amy Adams wearing them best, he added.

Among the guys, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jon Hamm were at the top of Zarian’s best-of list. “Leo always dresses to impress, and this time he went with a classic tux and classic black tie,” he said. “Jon Hamm dressed in period bow tie as his Mad Men character.”

Another star showed up in character at the Golden Globes: Drew Barrymore, who presented alongside her Grey Gardens co-star, Jessica Lange. “Drew was so much fun, she was dressing for her new role in the HBO movie. I think she looked like Ginger from Gilligan’s Island, in ice-blue silk Christian Dior custom-designed by John Galliano. She had that one-cocktail-too-many Marilyn Monroe hair.”

As for the night’s misses, Zarian had to call out Ugly Betty star America Ferrera, simply because her dress was “too old for her, in part because of a wide beaded collar. It became about the dress, and not about her. It was just too much dress for her,” he said.

We have dozens more clips available on the Red Carpet Events: The Golden Globes spotlight page, where you can check out all the red carpet fashion and catch the night’s best moments, including Kate Winslet’s endearing speech and Tracey Morgan’s hilarious acceptance on behalf of 30 Rock .

Programming Notes

September 11th, 2008 by Rebecca Harper Editor

This week was full of debuts, including the return of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the highly anticipated premiere of Fringe, the new series from J.J. Abrams. And, for fans of the runway and the red carpet, we’ve also added more fashion content.

I only discovered Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles this summer. And thanks to the Season 2 premiere, “Samson & Delilah,” I’m hooked for life. All it took was Shirley Manson (the lead singer from the band Garbage) — the show’s new bad girl — and the remaining question of why Cromartie, a T-888 cyborg from the future, didn’t kill off Agent Ellis in last season’s finale. (Besides, I’m still not sure about Cameron…)

Meanwhile, Fringe brings a little of that old X-Files feeling back to the airwaves, thanks to its focus on the paranormal. And while some might think Agent Dunham is a little like Scully, the show is J.J. Abrams through and through, from the initial plane crash to the score by composer Michael Giacchino — both elements that should seem familiar to anyone familiar with Lost. As a little extra for ReGenesis fans, Peter Outerbridge (Dr. Sandstrom himself) makes a brief appearance as a doctor in the pilot.

If fashion’s more your thing, we’ve added highlights from the Spring 2009 collections at New York Fashion Week. With runway highlights, interviews and backstage coverage from our partners at Style Network, Style.com and Chic.TV, it’s your chance to see the hottest looks for spring.

And for the ultimate fashion fix, check out the premiere episode of Bravo’s new series, The Rachel Zoe Project. Zoe (rhymes with “doe”) has been a fashion it-girl for years now, styling A-list celebs like Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner. Her new reality show covers everything from her hunt for red carpet-worthy looks to her plans to create her own line of denim, sunglasses and handbags. Throw in some scenes with her testy assistant, Taylor, and you’ve got a reality TV show.

Enjoy,

Rebecca
