Hulu goes Green

April 22nd, 2008

Today, we celebrate the 28th Annual Earth Day. We’ve scoured our content to bring you our greenest content in the "Green is Universal" collection. This collection features episodes from one of my favorite environmentally focused shows Big Ideas for a Small Planet to more comedic episodes gathered from our most popular shows such as the "Greenzo" episode from 30 Rock.

Global warming is a complex problem, but though some disagreement of its impact remains, most experts agree it is largely a man-made problem. All week, we will be bringing you content to remind you of the Earth’s fragility and how our awareness and involvement can help. Shows like Eco Biz and Big Ideas for a Small Planet show how businesses around the world are changing to better the environment.

You may not need to threaten your co-workers with a wasp-hive for parking in a reserved-for-carpoolers spot, but there are things you can do around the house and at work to reduce your individual carbon emissions. Check out Fox’s “Green it. Mean it.” page which consists of clips with environment-friendly ideas. Carrying a tote bag to the super market and using the internet to pay your bills are just two of the simple changes that can form a lightweight green checklist.

Share a clip and help spread the word this Earth Day!

Where amazing happens...

April 19th, 2008

The NBA has been innovative in their ads for the playoffs for years now. This year they feature two superstar players reading from the same script with half their faces shown on the screen. Take this one for example:

You can see complete collection for other combinations.

Speaking of the NBA, the playoffs are here! And judging from how adrenaline-filled and unpredictable the regular season was in the Western Conference, the playoffs will prove to be no less dramatic. We here at Hulu will keep you up to date with great NBA videos from the Top 10 highlights, to 5-Star plays, to recaps each night and episodes of NBA 360 if you missed anything or can't get enough.

Stay tuned to Hulu to keep on top of the NBA's second season...

You Know You Want to Watch

April 16th, 2008

I don’t know who coined that phrase, but it rings true for a lot of video content, including some of the programs we offer on Hulu: Paradise Hotel, The Girls Next Door, The Girl Next Door, the, uh, Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Today we're excited to present the entire fifth season of Nip/Tuck, the great FX series about two “ethically-challenged” plastic surgeons. This show has it all – sex, drugs, music, and plastic surgery.

The show features a beautiful cast of actors in beautiful locations engaged in (sometimes less than) beautiful dramatics, and this season brings a great line up of guest stars. Still starring Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon as two handsome and single plastic surgeons, Nip/Tuck's fifth season relocates the McNamara/Troy practice to Beverly Hills, right in Hulu’s back yard.

We’ve been waiting anxiously to get this show, and I know from our user feedback that a lot of you have been too.

Enjoy! I won’t tell...

Sharing is good

April 12th, 2008

It's been three weeks now since Hulu.com came out of private beta, and we hope you've been having fun with the service so far. We've been excited to welcome new users to our site, but we're just as excited to see Hulu videos popping up on other corners of the web. We know you spread your time online across a wide range of sites, and we want to make it easy to enjoy and share Hulu videos wherever you happen to be on the web.

Since the very beginning, we've allowed users to e-mail and embed videos. We've recently added the ability to share videos to some of the top social networking and bookmarking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Digg. To do this, just click the Share button inside the video player when watching any video and then click the button for the site you'd like to post to.

We've also updated our RSS feeds to allow you to include Hulu embedded videos directly in the feed as an enclosure. That way, you can watch Hulu videos from within the comforts of your RSS news reader. To include Hulu embedded videos in an RSS feed, visit the RSS Feeds page and select the "add video" checkbox before adding the feed to your RSS reader.

Let us know what you think of these features at feedback@hulu.com and remember: sharing is good!

As a group, the Hulu team watches a disproportionately high number of TV shows and movies, but we still find that Hulu introduces us to surprising new programs all the time. One of my favorite discoveries is Three Sheets, in which comedian and liquor connoisseur Zane Lamprey travels around the world and samples the drinking culture of his host countries. He may have the world’s best job!

In the first two seasons, Zane downed unfiltered beer in Belgium, sampled snake blood in Taipei, and convinced a champagne lover to chug a glass of Cristal in France.

Season 3 of Three Sheets premieres on MOJO on April 10th, but starting today you can watch the first episode exclusively at Hulu.com for one week. On his first trip this season, Zane Lamprey travels to Chile to try and drink the locals under the table.

After you've drunk your fill of red wine made from carménère grape (grown only in Chile), downed a few Picso Sours, and sampled your fair share of blonde beers, check out some other cool shows from MOJO including Wall Street Warriors, Pressure Cook, and King of Miami.

The Zane Lamprey of Hulu happy hours,
Alex
