A Q&A with Maggie Q of ‘Designated Survivor’

November 4th, 2016 by Raef Harrison

Call it a Maggie Q&A, if you will.

Imagine you woke one morning and you were President of the United States. Terrifying, right? Now imagine that the reason you woke up as POTUS is because there was an attack on Congress and you were the last person standing.

This is the premise of the hit freshman series Designated Survivor on ABC, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Kal Penn, and Maggie Q as Hannah Wells, the lead FBI agent tasked with solving the mystery of who perpetrated said attack. Probably best known for her role on the CW show Nikita and most recently in CBS’ Stalker, Maggie Q has played her fair share of tough women in even tougher situations. But of all these roles, this has to be one of the most extreme scenarios. We had a quick Q&A with the actress to see what it was like working on a story of this magnitude.

Tell us about your character on the show
I play Special Agent Hannah Wells. She is one of the lead investigators in the bombing of the Capitol Building in the show. Her specialty within the FBI is counter-terrorism.

What made you want to work on this project?
Honestly, besides the pilot script being great, it really was creator David Guggenheim who sat me down and sold the show to me. In Hollywood there is a mix of people like any business, but I know if I am potentially going to spend years on something, it has to be with good people that I want to work with. Not that I have to. Kiefer’s career is one that I have long admired, that was the second thing.

What are you most excited for viewers to experience from the show?
The unexpected!

What’s the least spoiler-y thing you can tell us about the season?
That things may appear bad, but may actually be worse. Ha!

How do you think you’d react to a situation like this?
I think much like Tom Kirkman, I would be absolutely shitting my pants. Then I would find moments of strength, after throwing up.

Given our current political climate, would you ever want to get into politics?
Funnily enough when I was a kid, I did want to get into politics. I loved it. Based on our current political situation… can’t anyone just get into politics?!

Designated Survivor airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on ABC, and is available next day on Hulu.
