8 – Sons of Anarchy
Kurt Sutter’s Hamlet-inspired study of a Northern California motorcycle gang is centered on a band of gruff, seemingly soulless characters. They’re gun runners, drug dealers, and murderers. And acronyms. Mostly acronyms, actually.
But they’re human.
Look past the guns and leather, and you’ll find the emotional conflict at its core. For the FX drama’s entire run, the tension between Jax (Charlie Hunnman), his stepfather Clay (Ron Perlman), and his bad-ass mother Gemma (Katey Sagal) has pulled us in, even when things get ugly. And things often get terribly ugly, like they did this fall when a beloved character gave up his life to protect his brotherhood, an inexperienced Jax seized control of SAMCRO from his stepfather, and who spent much of the season plotting his return to the throne.
