Hulu Plus Arrives on Seven Android Tablets. With a Brand New Style.

March 29th, 2012 by Rajiv Makhijani and Zachary Pinter Software Developers

Today marks a very special day for us at Hulu. From the beginning, our focus has been to bring the world’s most beloved TV shows and movies to entertainment fans whenever they want, wherever they want. This not only means launching Hulu Plus on every device in the market, but also doing so with style.

We’re thrilled to announce that today Hulu Plus is available on seven Android tablets with a brand new, super deluxe Hulu Plus user interface. Download the Hulu Plus app from Google Play and experience a new way to watch TV with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola Xoom, Motorola XYBoard 10.1, Toshiba Thrive, Acer Iconia and LG G-Slate. This is just the beginning of our Android tablet rollout.

The new Hulu Plus app on Android introduces a clean, visually rich design to create an engaging way for you to discover content. We’ve improved the user experience with horizontal “trays” so you can naturally swipe while browsing through TV shows and movies. The pages feature large thumbnails with beautiful visuals to show off your Android tablet’s graphical prowess.

We’ve organized our content library so it’s easy to discover new shows and keep up with the shows you already love. Jump back into your favorite shows quickly and easily with the “What You’re Watching” tray and never miss a new episode or lose your place in a series. Check out popular and recommended content in a variety of genres and laugh at last night’s hilarious Saturday Night Live skit or cry over last week’s Smash episode. And keep up with the hottest trending clips and scroll through the latest movie trailers with ease.

For $7.99 a month, watch current season episodes of Family Guy, The Office, New Girl, Once Upon a Time, Parks and Recreation, Misfits and America’s Next Top Model. Or marathon through every episode of Community, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost. Choose from hundreds of movies including popular favorites from Miramax.

When building this app, we looked for ways to grant you instant access to exactly what you want to watch. Once you decide on a show, hold your finger down on the show’s thumbnail and the latest episode of the series will automatically start playing. If you’ve been following a show for a while, hold your finger down on the show’s thumbnail and the next episode will automatically launch based on where you are in the series.

Our team worked hard to build a fresh and engaging way to experience premium content on Android tablets, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Let us know what new content you discover with the Hulu Plus on Android app, and stay tuned as we roll out on more devices.

  • Hi Kathy,

Thanks for posting and sorry for the trouble. We are currently working with LG to get this resolved. Please feel free to contact LG directly for additional support ( http://www.lg.com/us/support ).

You can see a list of currently supported LG models by heading to ( http://wwwstg.lg.com/us/tv-audio-video/discoverlgtvs/smarttv_partnergrid/index.jsp ).

I recently purchased an LG BP620C Smart 3D Blue-Ray Disc Player. The box said that it would provide access to HULU PLUS, but I am unable to access it. I do not see any LG’s listed on the HULU site, is this model supported? Is there a published list of which ones are supported? I am disappointed that this product was marketed as having access to HULU. I am thinking of going back to my ROKU, it was so dependable.

  • Tom says:

Is there any update on when the Hulu+ app will stop disabling HDMI on the Xoom? We’d love to watch on a big screen.

  • Hi David,

Thanks for posting. At this time we don’t have any plans to announce regarding Hulu Plus availability on BlackBerry PlayBook and HP TouchPad, but please keep checking Hulu Blog and our devices page ( http://www.hulu.com/plus/devices ) for any updates.

    Regards,

  • E.Wyngowski says:

It is a lie that you can’t support HDMI out when commercials and the interface work.. If it works with the other parts of the program and netflix even supports HDMI out… Hulu+ is off my list of bills until you have HDMI out support., I can’t always bring my PC with me.

  • David says:

Any plans to support the HP Touchpad or Blackberry Playbook? I like the OS they use but miss having access to sites like Netflix & Hulu. Considering rooting them to Android so I can get the marketplace but that’s the last resort.

  • Hi Amanda,

Thanks for posting. I’m sorry that we don’t currently support your Samsung Galaxy S or the Nook Color. Because each Android phone and tablet has a different set of specifications that we need to take into account, we’re only able to support a select number of them at this point in time. We’re working hard to bring Hulu Plus to a wide variety of Android devices as soon as possible and have recently added devices, such as the Galaxy S II. While we still have more work to do, we’re working hard to get there. If there’s anything else I can address for you, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Hulu Support

  • Amanda says:

It is now July and still no hulu+ on My Nook Color or Samsung GalaxyS. Why is this?

  • Hi there,

For issues like this, please contact us at http://www.hulu.com/support. We’ll be better able to assist you that way.

    Thanks!

  • Andrew says:

Error 91. If it’s true what they say and this is and 93 are DRM blocking unlocked bootleggers and/or root, then that’s just ridiculous. I got an android phone to be able to have the freedom of open source only to be screwed over with DRM like this. Why does it even matter to you guys if we’re unlocked.

  • GE says:

It worked on the first day for my AT&T HTC One X, but it no longer works. All it does is stay in a constant loop. The show starts up then says this show is sponsored by xxxx and it stops and repeats the this show is sponsored by xxx.

  • Chris says:

when will hulu plus be available for the samsung tablets? I have one and hate not being able to use it. :(

  • Hi Jessica,

Sorry for the trouble. Your HTC EVO 4G should be supported. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Hulu Plus app? If that doesn’t help, can you please get in touch with us at http://www.hulu.com/support so we can get to the bottom of this? I’m sure we’ll get this worked out.

    Thanks,
    Hulu Support

  • Jessica says:

I have a flashed HTC EVO 4G and when I try to open Hulu a box pops up saying “Video playback on this device is not currently supported”,but I’ve read many places that Hulu is supported on the evo 4g. Is it because it’s flashed that it doesn’t work?

  • Hi Linda,

Thanks for posting. Right now, we support many LG models, but not all. I just did a quick search for LG BD640 and, unfortunately, it’s not supported just yet. Ideally, we’d want Hulu Plus on as many devices as possible, so we’ll keep working with LG to add your model. I don’t have any news either way right now, so I’m sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

If there’s anything else we can do, please let us know at ( hulu.com/support/support_form ).

    Thanks,
    Hulu Support

  • Linda A says:

I was gifted with a Network Blue Ray DVD Disc Player by LG, a BD640. I can watch Netflix, Vudu, Utube, Cimina Now. I just put it on today. How do I get HULU on it? I only like Netflix & HULU. I can see Hulu on the WII, but I do not like using the WII.
    Can U help??

  • dave j says:

Why can’t i play all videos on a tablet. Lots of them say web only. Thanks

  • Hi Calvin,

Thanks for posting. Sorry for the trouble. Are you having trouble logging in on both your laptop and iPad? If you’re able to log in, are you then having trouble loading the videos?

Any other information would be very helpful in helping us to get to the bottom of this.

    Thanks,
    Hulu Support

  • Calvin Miller says:

After subscribing to Hulu Plus, unable to connect on my IPad or Laptop.

  • Wesley says:

Hulu+ needs to be able to use HDMI out! When will it be fixed?

  • Hi Brandon,

Thanks for writing in. I’m sorry we’re not supported on Samsung phones. While we don’t have a time frame to share right now, we are actively working with Samsung to find a solution.

Again, I’m sorry for the frustration. We’re working hard to bring Hulu Plus to a wide variety of Android devices as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience. If there’s anything else I can address for you, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Hulu Support

  • Matt says:

Support for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 please.

  • Brandon says:

I loved hulu and had it for a long time on my old HTC phone but no support on any Samsung devices? Absolutely ridiculous, am I the only one who knows about the percentage of smartphones and how dominating Samsung is? I have the galaxy note its ridiculous the types of phones that offer hulu and I don’t have hulu.

  • luis says:

have a galexie tab watup hook me up

  • JP says:

Lack of HDMI support is a major issue (deal breaker) that needs to be fixed. Watching on the small screen only works when not at home! Will there be an app for HULU (not plus)?

  • Tai says:

Don’t forget about us Lenovo tablet users as you expand to other Android devices! :)

  • zac says:

Wheres the love for the samsung galaxy tab? At least i have nwtflix.

  • Mike Lisanke says:

Like others, I found HuluPlus to have one big minus. Its app disables HDMI output. This is Not a copyright issue that I understand; NetFlix has no problems. The screen size I use should be my business. For me, no HDMI, no HuluPlus. Thx, Mike

  • SAA says:

Just downloaded the largest software and get 91 error… connection issue. Netflix works so why does this not work? I have a thrive.

  • Robert Reynolds says:

I would really like to see this come to the Acer a100. Its a great tablet but i was upset when i saw that i couldnt have hulu. I look forward to seeing it soon. thanks hulu for what yhou do

  • pais says:

Please develop hulu plus for the Acer a100. One can only watch so much Netflix…

  • Kellie says:

Wow, everyone is so rude and entitled. I’m sure there are behind the scenes reasons Hulu is not offering H+ on every single Android device yet. Why would they WANT to limit their market share? I also am hoping this comes to my Galaxy Tab soon and I’m keeping a close watch, but, until then I have my TV’s with Roku and my Kindle Fire and my Iphone. Okay, maybe I’m more patient because I have several other options, but being jerks isn’t going to make it go faster.

I’m just going to say…pretty please! I would love to see this available on the Galaxy Tab! Keeping my fingers crossed it comes soon! I LOVE Hulu Plus and I’m NOT cancelling my subscription!

  • Hi Bob,

Thanks for writing in. I definitely understand your frustration. While we don’t have a time frame to share right now, we are actively working with Samsung to find a solution.

  • Hi Lynne,

Thanks for posting. While we don’t support Google TV at the moment, we’d love to add Hulu Plus to it in the future. Lots of folks ask us about it, so we definitely know there’s a demand.

Before we support Google TV, however, we need to have the streaming rights for our content. In addition, we also need agreements in place with our content providers, hardware manufacturers, and Google itself.

While there’s no official news, if or when Google TV support is announced, you’ll see it at ( http://www.hulu.com/plus/devices ).

  • H says:

I will never get a subscription to Hulu Plus until you guys support the Galaxy Tab.

  • Lynne says:

Any feel for whether there will be Hulu for Google TV yet this year? Please give us a read on t. My later give is to buy another Apple TV and mirror from my iPad. But, I’d rather you deliver to GTV. Thanks!

  • Bob Zaccaria says:

I just love Hulu+ but am so very upset that I can not use the service on three of our devices which are all Samsung. We have a Samsung Fascinate, Galaxy Tab 7.0 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 and none of them will accept Hulu+.

How long do we have to wait for a viable solution ? The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the second most purchased and used tablet in the world, when is Hulu+ going to come out with an application that will run on this tablet ?

    Still waiting ….. :-(

  • Michelle says:

I saw in the original announcement that Acer Iconia is now on the list of compatible devices, then read in the comments that it was only the a500. I have the a200with ics. Are there plans to add the a200? When I tried to download it said not compatible with this device.

  • Hi Mark,

The rights we have that allow us to stream to Android phones and tablets only extend to those individual devices, so they can’t be used as an intermediary to get the video to your TV. We’re working with our content providers to enable broader access. Thank you for being patient with us in the meantime, and stay tuned!

Thanks for the App, good job! Runs great on my Xoom. I don’t understand why the HDMI out is disabled. Is that a feature you may add in the future?

  • trout says:

Seriously what is up with Google TV – Hulu is really frustrating!

  • Shellby says:

yup and with this latest development of hulu+ stupidity I am now offically cancelling my subscription. You guys skipped right over the second best selling tablet in the Andriod universe? Flipping stupid that my Samsung tab still has no hulu support. You guys are not worth the $7 a month.

  • Christine says:

    Hi,
Would love to see Hulu Plus on the Samsung Galaxy Tabs.
    Thanks!

  • Kayla says:

  • BruceMcF says:

What Melissa said ~ where’s the Nook Color app that back before Christmas, Hulu promised would be available sometime this year? I got tired of waiting and turned off my HuluPlus. If Funimation gets their app in the Nook store before you do, I’ll have their app on my Nook, and it’ll be tempting to get their premium membership and at least get anime ad-free.

  • Steve Croxton says:

What the…available on the Acer Iconia A500 only??? I’m seriously wanting to get an A100 as the size makes more sense to me. Why no H+ on the A100? What’s the difference?

  • Aimee Lyn says:

Thank You! today I woke up to Hulu Plus being available for my Xoom running the new 4.0.4 update! Thanks so much for getting it fixed fast for us Xoom owners!

  • Hello RB–

What exactly happens when you try to download the app on your Xoom? Do you get an error message? Also, what version of Android are you running?

    Thanks,

I am still unable to load Hulu Plus on my Xoom. I subscribed to Hulu plus last week based on the info that it would be available on the Xoom. Will this be corrected today? If not, how can i request my subscription be cancelled and a refund?

  • RH says:

I agree. There is no way that I will continue my subscription to Hulu Plus. I realize that Android is fragmented market, but it makes no sense to not target the most popular devices first. I will resubscribe once (cancelled as of today) until Tab 10.1 is supported. At least Netflix is available.

  • Hi Pedro,

Thanks for posting. At this time, our Hulu Plus application is not supported on any Samsung tablets. While we don’t have a time frame right now, we are working with Samsung to bring Hulu Plus to their Android sets.

    Thanks.

  • Melissa says:

Still waiting to see Hulu on the Nook Color…I am aware it is on the Nook Tablet, but didnt upgrade because they promised that it would soon be on the Nook Color. Any word on that yet? Estimated date of arrival? Is it still going to happen?

  • Andrew says:

How come the Samsung Galaxy Tab always gets left out?

  • Hi Kristian,

Unfortunately, at this time we do not support HDMI (or any other video out) on any Android devices. It is something that we would love to ad, but we do not have any set plans for adding it at this time.

    Thanks!”

  • Tramel, what do you mean by “we would need to make sure 4.0.4 is the official release?” 4.0.4 is officially released and pushed to the Xoom Wi-Fi by Google directly. See the official announcement here: https://plus.google.com/104629412415657030658/posts/NgGwavbmkQ7

Currently the Hulu Plus app for the Motorola Xoom tablet is available on 4.0.3 at best. We definitely would like to keep our application up to date, however we would need to make sure 4.0.4 is the official release. Our mobile developers are already looking into this though, so we do appreciate your patience and understanding.

  • Brian Dunkel says:

So disappointing to not see Samsung products on that list. I’m aware that this is a two way street and Samsung may be as much to blame as Hulu, but it’s getting tiresome. I’m a Galaxy Tab 10.1 owner and have been waiting for sometime to see Hulu make it’s way there.

  • Aimee Lyn says:

I am too having the same problem with my Xoom. was just pushed the update 4.0.4 and Google Play is showing not compatible with my Xoom Wi-Fi

The Nexus S is a Samsung phone. Now you’re just bs’ing us.

    Sincerely,

  • bd says:

Please tell me as a developer how you manage to put this app on so many other Tegra based tablets and yet miss the best tablet Tegra tablet of 2010 in the Galaxy Tab 10.1? Is it laziness or incompetence? You put the app on the iPhone, Apple’s flagship but not on the Galaxy Nexus, Android’s flagship? Again, laziness or just inability?

  • Gary! says:

Which Acer Iconia, there are several. It doesn’t appear to be compatible with my Acer Iconia A100, so says play.google.com.

  • Sam says:

Any chance of the HP Touchpad and WebOS/Open WebOS being added? Or at the very least Android on CM9?

  • Curt says:

Seriously?!? You put it on the Acer Iconia but you do not put it on the Samsung Galaxy tab?

I’ve been considering a reason for canceling… Well, i think I just found it… this is truly ridiculous…

  • Juan Flores says:

when will you guys release the App for my HTC EVO View 4G tablet??? There’s one for the HTC Flyer (which is the exact same thing as the EVO View) why not make it available for the View??? I’ve been a subscriber for quite some time now & my tablet is JUST lacking the official Hulu+ app. Plus I’m a Sprint sales rep & I’m always talking to customers about Hulu+ & how much of it they can watch with our unlimited data! My HTC EVO 4G phone has it & it works great, but it really kills me that my Evo View tablet isn’t supported. I’m honestly considering buying a refurbished iPad JUST so I can have Hulu+ on a tablet. Please don’t force me to do that.

  • Craig Wann says:

Does the UI refresh effect the Kindle Fire?

  • Marc says:

And yet us BlackBerry PlayBook users are still left in the dust. Is there ever going to be a Hulu app for the PlayBook? If not, huge fail on both RIM and Hulu for not getting this done. Don’t you want our money?

  • Osi says:

don’t forget to take off all of that false advertising on the hulu plus “features” that don’t exist.

  • Kyle says:

I’m using a Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi (USA) with Android version 4.0.4 and the Play Store states “Your device isn’t compatible with this version”.

  • MG says:

Good news for sure- but c’mon, at least pick to bring support to the tablets most people use, like the Galaxy Tab series! Between lack of support for my phone, my tablet and the insane streaming copyright rules about which show you can see on which device, I’m about to quit my service too! :/

  • Melissa says:

Wow, awesome. I like this better than the other app I had to use to access Hulu. I love that you can exit the app, come back, and it resumes where you left off. The other app was wiggy like that and a tad glitchy. The only issue I’ve seen so far is that the screen flashes when the video is paused. But not a huge deal so far.

Overall, I like the initial impression. Long term remains to be seen, obviously.

  • Patrick_Hulu says:

@Kristian Serrano: Just a glitch in the matrix. Your Xoom should work great now. Thanks for your support!

  • Sharelllee Rosario says:

When hulu plus for galaxy s?

  • Will S says:

Why do you guys still block devices you don’t test when every other Android app maker knows this is unnecessary? If you have to test on every device you will never, ever be able to support them all. I still have to download a hacked version of the hulu app for it to work on my Galaxy Nexus and this device is already starting to feel old to me. And where the heck is the Google TV app?!

  • JT says:

Finally supporting my Prime. New UI looks *awesome*.

  • Wayde says:

Good job, Hulu! It’s nice to see the service expand into Android-land. There are clearly a few more devices to go but it’s nice to see the ball rolling.

  • The app doesn’t allow playback on the Xoom. Is this a bug or intentional?

  • GD says:

What is the deal… the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the big dog in the Android tablets and you do not support it. or the ICS 4.0 nexus really really people… I just may cancel my sub as you guys do not support 3 of my Android devices…
