Rookie: (Debbie) Downer and Out on Christmas

December 7th, 2011 by Tavi Gevinson

If there’s one thing I love, it’s cookies. If there are two things I love, it’s cookies and Saturday Night Live. This clip has both! It also has Rachel Dratch, Jack Black, Christmas (so it’s RELEVANT!) and waaaamp-waaaamp sound effects. Debbie Downer is a classic and this Christmas one is my favorite. Usually, around this time of year, I am so enticed by music and shiny things and little animated reindeer that I get really into the spirit of this holiday I don’t even celebrate. Other times, I enjoy complaining about how commercial and ubiquitous it all is even though I don’t really care. And nobody stops me, because they know that I am Jewish, and they feel bad about the fact that I have a mutated candlestick instead of a beautiful fir tree, and that I probably get socks and pens instead of a Wii. At these times, I pull out this clip, so as to indulge fully in the cynicism.

I was also considering Kaitlin at the Mall for today, but I thought I would keep the holiday theme going. I would like to say however that I have met many Kaitlins in my time. They were all theater kids. I hope Kaitlin found her calling eventually.
