While I’ve never physically set foot in Portland, I’ve listened to so many bands from the area that I feel like I’ve been there. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein have furthered my education with Portlandia, a comedy series that explores the lives of various eccentric city denizens. For example, who knew that in Portland I could sleep ’til 11, save the world with a song, and retire in my 20s?
It’s not surprising to me that music is a big part of Portlandia. Carrie Brownstein, formerly of the critically acclaimed (and simply awesome) rock band Sleater-Kinney, just released a new album with fellow S-K alum Janet Weiss, Mary Timony (Helium), and Rebecca Cole (The Minders) under the name Wild Flag. The self-titled debut album’s inventive hooks and quirky compositions have been on repeat for me these past few weeks and I definitely encourage you to check it out.
And for those of you who, like me, yearn for a full on Sleater-Kinney reunion, check out Corin Tucker guesting on Portlandia in this clip.
