Hulu Launches Subscription Service in Japan

August 31st, 2011 by Johannes Larcher

At the very beginning of Hulu, we asked ourselves one simple question: What if?

What if we could help people find and enjoy the world’s premium content when, how and where they want it?

Since then, we’ve aspired to build a product that all our customers would unabashedly love. We’ve been focused on offering the world’s premium content. And we’ve been focused on becoming a global brand.

Today, we are taking a first, but important step to make good on our aspiration to serve customers all over the world. I am excited to announce that we have launched our first product outside the U.S.

Hulu is now officially available in Japan. Hulu’s first-of-its-kind service offers entertainment fans in Japan unlimited instant access to hundreds of premium feature films and thousands of episodes of popular TV shows from a variety of content providers, including CBS, NBCUniversal International Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company (Japan) featuring content from Disney/ABC Television Group and The Walt Disney Studios, and Warner Bros. Subscribers can watch at any time across connected TV’s, gaming and entertainment consoles, blu-ray players, smartphones, tablets and PCs, without advertising, for ¥1,480 per month.

Starting at launch and in the weeks following, Hulu’s service will offer entertainment fans in Japan unlimited instant access to hundreds of premium feature films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Armageddon, Men in Black, Troy, and As Good As It Gets and more; and thousands of episodes from previous seasons of TV shows including 24, Bones, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, Fringe, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Heroes, LOST, NCIS, Private Practice, Prison Break, and Ugly Betty and more.

And there is much more to come.

As we’ve done in the U.S., we will rapidly and continually add content to the service. The content lineup will only become more robust over time, including the addition of Japanese-produced content and content from across the Asian region in the near term.

We are equally proud of the user experience that the Hulu team has built for Japanese entertainment fans. We are offering an intuitive and fully localized product available in both Japanese and English, with many of the popular Hulu features from the U.S. incorporated into the experience.

Like the U.S. service, the Hulu service in Japan is simple and easy to use. One single subscription follows the user across devices. Without skipping a beat, users can start watching a show on their PC, switch to their smart-phone, and finish watching it on their internet connected TV. No matter when and where an entertainment fan wants to watch popular TV shows and films – whether it’s in the office, in the living room, or on the go — Hulu will be there:

  • • Connected TVs and Blu-ray players: Panasonic VIERA TVs; and coming soon: Panasonic DIGA Blu-ray recorders, and Sony’s BRAVIA® HDTVs and connected Blu-ray Disc™ Players.
  • • Gaming and Entertainment Consoles: Coming soon: Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation®3, and Xbox 360®.
  • • Smartphones, Tablets and other Mobile Devices: Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, select Android phones from Fujitsu, HTC, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp and Sony Ericsson; and coming soon: select Android tablets

At our launch event in Tokyo today, we also announced that we have entered into an exclusive mobile marketing partnership with Japan’s largest mobile network, NTT Docomo. Details of this relationship will be unveiled shortly. However, Hulu subscribers in Japan will be able to use Hulu on any mobile carrier or internet service provider on supported devices. There are no long-term contracts and no minimum subscription commitments.

We hope that all fans of film and TV in Japan will enjoy Hulu’s service. To celebrate our launch in Japan, we are offering a one month free trial to any new subscriber.

We are committed to the success of our efforts in Japan and future international markets. Hulu in Japan is 100% owned and operated, and our growing Japan team has been hard at work building and inventing in our new Tokyo office. We are in Japan for the long term, and excited to continue building our product for Japanese consumers.

As we celebrate the launch of Hulu in Japan, we are conscious that this is just the first of more markets outside of the U.S. for Hulu. We hope that you will stay tuned for more news regarding our journey around the world.

A Day in will.i.am’s Life

August 31st, 2011 by Ben Collins Assistant Editor

If you were like me until a couple of days ago, will.i.am lives in that neutral place in your heart, right next to Saltines, boat shoes, and the Indiana Pacers.

You’re not sure about rooting for a guy who seems to always be wearing a studded jacket. You’re also secretly impressed by a dude who can write one of those songs with lyrics you need to know in order to leave the house and not be taken in by the FBI for anti-American behavior.

But watch this episode of “A Day in the Life,” where Morgan Spurlock follows the Black Eyed Peas star around for 24 hours.

Not only does it reveal him as a particularly worthwhile member of society, it even explains the studded jackets in a way that will make you like him more.

I know. Seems impossible, the jacket thing. But I got over my humps and—boom boom pow—I developed this weird, overwhelming admiration for his warm and inviting character. Don’t lie—don’t phunk with my heart—you know you want to follow along with me into will.i.am’s world of unending charity.

If you have any hangups (maybe it’s the jacket), meet me halfway. Imma be watching it again. Watch it with me. I just can’t get enough.

Also, The Time (Dirty Bit). Couldn’t get that song in there as a pun without getting fired.

Enjoy the episode.

One to Watch: “Up All Night”

August 31st, 2011 by Rebecca Harper Editor

This fall, Christina Applegate and Will Arnett are returning to primetime TV in NBC’s “Up All Night.” (Let’s hope they stick around this time.) It’s a grown-up comedy starring some genuinely funny people — new mom Maya Rudolph is on the show, too, after all.

In fact, the network recently upgraded Rudolph’s role on the show, making her a daytime talk show host of the Oprah variety (remember Rudolph’s Oprah impression on “SNL?”), with Applegate serving as her new-mom producer. Applegate’s character, Reagan, finds herself struggling to balance her successful career with a baby at home. Sounds like a lot of moms I know!

The show was created by “SNL” writer Emily Spivey, who found herself juggling a family life and her own TV career (on “SNL” as well as “Parks and Recreation“).

As Regan adjusts to life with a baby and a job — her husband, Chris (Arnett), is a stay-at-home dad — she’ll face many of the same issues many real-life moms face: sleep deprivation, self-doubt, and the pressure of today’s parenting protocols. But there’s also a twist: Reagan will also have to deal with the endless needs of her boss, Ava.

All this baby talk has us thinking: how did all of you juggle motherhood and career? Share your experiences in the comments!

Following Their Hearts

August 25th, 2011 by Rebecca Harper Editor

In Season 2 of “Modern Family,” it often seemed like the kids — including Rico Rodriguez’s Manny and Ariel Winter’s Alex — stole the scene. However, when it came to Baby Lily (played by twins Jaden and Ella Hiller), the producers seemed to let her fade into the background while her TV dads, Mitchell and Cameron (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet), took center stage.

There’s a big change in store for Season 3 of ABC’s hit comedy, however: the show recently signed on 4-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons to replace the Hiller twins as the adopted daughter of Cam and Mitch, EW.com reports. What led to the casting change? Well, executive producer Steve Levitan told Entertainment Weekly in May that “maybe they would be happier being kids. We don’t want them to be unhappy. If we feel it’s not in their best interest to stay, we will replace them, and ask that people forgive us for doing so.”

While we’re sad to hear the docile twins are leaving the show, the change got us to thinking about parenthood, and when you decide to say “OK, enough.” Parents can’t help but have dreams for their children, but sometimes those dreams aren’t actually what the kids want for themselves. Maybe Jaden and Ella will return to acting one day when they’re older. But for the time being, we have to applaud their mom and dad for letting the girls figure out what they want to do.

Perhaps you’re not a stage mom yourself, but maybe you always wanted a Little League champ, but your little slugger preferred to read a book. Or your future ballerina went gaga for racecars, instead. So tell us, how did you come to terms when your dreams for your kids didn’t exactly mesh with their own calling? Share your experiences with the rest of Hulu’s mom forum in the comments below, and tune into a few of our favorite “Modern Family” moments starring Jaden and Ella.

Green Room Guest Post: Russell Peters

August 24th, 2011 by Russell Peters

Russell Peters has sold out arenas in London. He almost can’t walk down the street without some fancy camouflage anywhere in the world. But in America, he basks in the warm glow of your standard comic’s celebrity. That’s why Morgan Spurlock followed Peters around on his American tour for 24 hours in the latest episode of “A Day in the Life.” Now, Russell’s talking about his appearance on the show. — Ed.

When your agent calls and tells you that Morgan Spurlock wants to include you in his new documentary project for Hulu, you don’t stop to think about it—you just say, “Yes!” I’m a bit of a documentary nerd and have seen all of Morgan’s work (Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? is way underrated, by the way), so of course I was excited.

We played around with different dates and finally got both of our schedules in sync and decided to shoot my episode of “A Day In The Life” when I was performing in Fairfax, VA.

On the night before the shoot, I met up with the film crew for drinks on the patio bar of my hotel in DC—and things got interesting right away. We were waiting for the waiter to prep our table when some guy barged through with his lady-friend and ex-military buddy and sat down in our spot. When my brother (who’s also my manager) asked them to give up the seating area we had been waiting for on the patio, the situation got heated and expletives were exchanged. Fortunately, it didn’t escalate into a full bar fight, and these characters eventually walked away, still cursing at us. It was a pretty surreal introduction to the great group of people that I’d be spending the next day with. Too bad we didn’t get that part on film!

I’ve been a stand-up comic for 22 years but in the last six years things really changed for me. I went from being a club comic to doing arenas. I know that most of America doesn’t know who I am, but somehow I still manage to sell out Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. My fans found me because of YouTube and the Internet, and now I’ve been lucky enough to work with a filmmaker that I highly respect on Hulu, part of the medium that made me who I am today. I hope you enjoy my episode of “A Day in the Life.”

If you want to learn more about my experience working with Morgan Spurlock, Hulu, and shooting “A Day in the Life,” I’ll be hosting a live chat on Twitter, today at 1pm PT / 4pm ET. Send in your questions using the hashtag #AskRussellP, and you’ll get answers straight from me @therealrussellp.
