Hulu Exclusive: Baccano!

September 30th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

The anime series Baccano! is available for online streaming in the U.S. for one month only exclusively on Hulu. (We expect to have more exclusives like this soon.) But what is Baccano!? We asked FUNimation writer Scott Porter to tell us more. — Rebecca Harper (), Editor

It would be great to tell you what Baccano! is about, but I’m afraid it’s not that easy. Let’s just start with the name: Baccano!. The word means ruckus. Commotion. Like the type of racket you hear at a party. Like a Halloween party thrown by Quentin Tarantino aboard a chartered train, where zombie Bonnie and Clyde mingle with some sort of evil monk, a pretty girl in a slinky dress, and a Fullmetal Alchemist cosplayer. And it’s the most awesome party ever until the band pulls out machine guns, someone summons a demon, and the evil monk guy eats zombie Clyde’s soul. That’s kind of what this series is like. But what is Baccano! about?

Well, I could tell you it’s about a mafia turf war in New York circa 1930. But I could also tell you it’s about a secret society of eighteenth century alchemists messing around with the occult. And there’s a bootlegged elixir that grants immortality. And people get kidnapped. Some severed limbs grow back. Throw in some car crashes and armed robberies. Oh, and people kiss. Which is nice, but that’s not really what Baccano! is about.

Let’s just go with this. The plot of Baccano! is actually several plots in a caper that crosses centuries and involves more than a dozen characters. Some of them can’t die, some of them are idiots, and even the good guys are violent criminals. The series starts right after it ends and then it sort of never ends. Follow me? It doesn’t matter. Just remember – Paths don’t cross in Baccano! They collide.

Dancing with the Stars: Week 2 Recap

September 30th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

There were plenty of missteps in the second week of Dancing with the Stars. Last week’s golden girl, Kelly Osbourne stumbled her way through the tango, Iron Chef chairman Mark Dacascos faltered at the beginning of his quickstep, former House majority leader Tom DeLay nearly dropped his partner at the finish of his otherwise respectable tango, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit veteran Kathy Ireland seemed stiff with an old-fashioned quickstep — so flat, in fact, she was unable to garner enough votes to stick around another week. Despite the fumbles, there were plenty of standouts this week. R&B singer Mya won over the judges with a sassy jive, singer Aaron Carter stood out with a zany quickstep, and entertainer Donny Osmond slipped on a velour suit to deliver a shagadelic jive set to “Secret Agent Man.” Here’s a look at some of the Hulu Team’s favorite performances of the week, plus a look at Kathy Ireland’s last dance. — Rebecca Harper () for the Yahoo! TV blog

Judges’ Favorite: Mya
Mya‘s partner, Dmitry Chaplin, donned geeky glasses and a tie and danced as a foil to Mya’s sexy flapper seductress in a sassy routine. She looked confident and on top of her game as she kicked and rock-stepped her way across the dance floor.

Quirkiest Quickstep: Aaron Carter
We knew we were in for something wacky when the Muppets’ Animal made an appearance before Aaron Carter‘s quickstep. Carter, dressed in Kermit-the-Frog green, pulled off a spectacular performance, though. He and partner Karina Smirnoff (his Miss Piggy, we presume) worked their way through an animated dance, leading judge Bruno Tonioli to exclaim “Spectacular!”

Best Recovery: Mark Dacascos
Seconds into his own quickstep, Mark Dacascos faltered a bit. But like a true competitor — he’s trained in martial arts — he powered through the rest of the dance, using his face almost as much as his feet. Dacascos may fly under the radar for a bit, but we think he has some staying power.

Scariest Moment: Tom DeLay
The night’s most frightful moment might have been UFC Ultimate Fighting Champion Chuck Liddell doing a fierce tango (to the White Stripes, no less), but then Tom DeLay nearly dropped partner Cheryl Burke to the floor at the end of their own tango. He’s been nursing an ankle injury, and it appeared as though Burke added a little too much “oomph” to their final move.

Eliminated: Kathy Ireland
Though former model Kathy Ireland looks fantastic in her ballroom costumes, the judges felt she was still too reserved in the second week of competition, that she was holding back. The voters at home agreed, because they ended up sending her home this week.

Hu-Listic: The Tick

September 30th, 2009 by Jocelyn Matsuo Asst Video Editor

Each week, Hulu’s Video Editor, Jocelyn Matsuo shares one of her picks from the Hulu library.

Let’s talk The Tick. This is one of those shows that makes me nostalgic because I actually remember when it was on the air — and I was sad to see it cancelled before its time. I bet you’ve already clicked the embedded player below, just by being reminded that it exists.

Thought we were done with superheroes? Hollywood doesn’t think so (Green Hornet, anyone?), so let’s enjoy the great ones.

Streaming Live from Austin: Hulu Rocks

September 29th, 2009 by Alex Kruglov Content Acquisition

Music fans, take note: Starting this Friday, October 2, Hulu will be streaming the legendary Austin City Limits music festival live from Austin’s Zilker Park. The live stream begins at 2 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. PDT) Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And if you want to catch some of your favorite acts again, tune back in on Monday, October 5 at 9 p.m. EDT as Hulu streams a highlight show with the festival’s biggest headliners. (We’ll post a list of the performances each day of the live stream.)

This year’s lineup is impressive. Those who enjoyed the Dave Matthews Band’s live performance from the Beacon Theatre on Hulu in June will get to see the boys again. For White Stripes/Raconteurs fans, ACL will host the sounds of the new super-group The Dead Weather, featuring The White Stripes’ Jack White and The Kills’ Alison Mosshart. And one of my favorite guitarists of all time, Ben Harper, brings his new band, Relentless7, to Austin to perform songs from their new album, “White Lies for Dark Times.”

Those of you who are into neo-soul will get to boogie down to John Legend (who recently killed it at L.A.’s Greek Theatre) and Raphael Saadiq. On the hip-hop side, there’s the always-catchy sibling act The Knux (whose album “Remind Me in 3 Days…” is on repeat in my household), and the party continues with the groove-tacular Thievery Corporation. For something more mellow, you can catch sets from the brooding indie singer-songwriters Bon Iver and Andrew Bird. Finally, if you love jazz improvisation as much as I do, you can’t miss Medeski Martin & Wood.

With more than 20 acts to be broadcast over three days — plus Monday’s highlights show — Hulu and Austin City Limits have teamed up to bring something for everyone. If you’re heading to Texas Hill Country to attend in person, Godspeed, but for everyone else this weekend, fire up Hulu and get ready to rock and roll.

Recap: ‘Saturday Night Live’ with Megan Fox

September 27th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

As the Saturday Night Live writers and producers pulled together the series’ 35th season premiere, they must have had one rule in mind: keep it sexy. With Megan Fox hosting, it wasn’t too much of a struggle, and every sketch featuring the ‘Transformers’ star made good use of her looks, starting off with a monologue that poked fun of the fake nude photos of her scattered across the Internet. We saw the 23-year as a blonde bombshell flight attendant in one sketch; a red-headed Russian bride in another. When the spotlight wasn’t on Fox, world politics came to the forefront. To open the show, Fred Armisen donned a brown robe and did his best Omar Gadhafi, blaming a computer crash for the Libyan president’s rambling U.N. speech. In an otherwise flat week, the week’s standout was newcomer Jenny Slate — who dropped an F-bomb in the live feed (it was fixed for the West Coast) — and Kenan Thompson. His Grady Wilson impression was one of the funniest bits of the night (dip the ladle!), and his Jean K. Jean report on Weekend Update upstaged Kristen Wiig’s Judy Grimes. Only time will tell if Thompson’s this season’s breakout star, but in the meantime, check out some of this weekend’s SNL highlights below. — Rebecca Harper (), Editor
