Kicking It

April 8th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

In Hulu’s documentaries section this week, we’re highlighting Kicking It, a documentary about the Homeless World Cup, an international street soccer tournament. We’ve posted a Q&A with director Susan Koch in the discussion boards for the video, but Koch also shared the following blog entry with us. We hope you find this story as inspiring as we do. — Rebecca Harper

Every now and then you’ll get an email or call that makes all those long filmmaking hours totally worth it. I got one of those recently from a guy in Chicago. It came totally out of the blue. It was not only gratifying to receive, but a reminder of why many of us make films — hopefully we are doing our part to shed light on important stories and help make this world a better, more just place. I was thinking of paraphrasing it, but I can’t say it nearly as eloquently and as simply as Jason did. So here it is. — Susan Koch, director, Kicking It

“Hello Susan, my name is Jason Holmes and I am the coach of Inferno Soccer Club based out of Chicagoland, Ill. I wanted to email you and thank you for something you may not even know you did. Last September, I came home from work at about 2 a.m. I turned on ESPN to try and catch SportsCenter and see how the Cubs were doing. SportsCenter wasn’t on. Instead I saw Kicking It for the first time. I was so enthralled and inspired by what I saw, I couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night. So I went to the computer and googled Lawrence Cann [manager of the U.S. team] and emailed him. From that point on, a soccer program has developed here in the Chicagoland area that has helped 11 out of 25 men find housing! I want to thank you for your help bringing attention to the homeless plight and for inspiring me to take a more active role in ending homelessness. Our team has progressed enormously and will be attending this year’s Homeless USA cup in Washington, D.C. I’m including a link to some Chicago press featuring the team in which I mention Kicking It. Once again, thank you for the inspiration.”

I love all of the documentaries Hulu is adding lately, and I’m looking forward to watching this one.

I watched SuperSize Me a few weeks ago. It had been one that I had wanted to watch since it came out.

Thanks Hulu and keep up the good work!

I really liked this documentary. Has Hulu ever looked into getting real full soccer games?
