February 26th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

blog_hulu_awards

For Hulu’s upcoming one-year anniversary, we’ve gone through thousands of videos to come up with some of our favorite videos currently available on hulu.com. We’ve narrowed the field down to 10 categories, recognizing everything from Family Guy and Saturday Night Live to the underappreciated shows we think deserve a second shot. Now we leave it up to youto vote for the best in each field.

You can go to the Hulu Awards spotlight page to see the contenders, watch clips and vote for your favorites. You can vote as often as you like — just click on the “vote” button underneath your pick for that particular category to cast your vote. Polls will close at 12:01 a.m. PST on Wednesday, March 11, and we’ll tally up the results then. Winners will be announced on our anniversary, March 12, when we’ll also reveal some viewer favorites on hulu.com and across the web.

Think you have a better choice for a song worthy of Rock Band, or any of the other categories? You can use the Hulu Awards discussion boards to share and discuss your top picks with the rest of the Hulu audience.

We’ve also set up a Hulu Awards widget that allows you to embed our picks directly on your web page or blog. Simply grab the embed code from the Hulu Awards page and then paste it on your site.

Stay tuned through the next few weeks for more insight into each of the Hulu Awards categories, and remember to vote often!

Working Out with Jillian Michaels

February 25th, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

Jillian Michaels has made a name for herself as the no-holds-barred team trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, where she whips contestants into shape over the course of several weeks of competition. Michaels recently teamed up with Exercise TV to create a series of mini-workouts that are designed to add a little boost to your exercise routine. Below, she answered a few questions from Hulu about her own exercise regime, what it’s like to work with The Biggest Loser, and how to incorporate these workouts into your daily routine.

Hulu: What made you decide to become a personal trainer?

Jillian: I have a passion for utilizing fitness as a tool to rebuild people’s lives because my life was transformed by my martial arts instructor, who helped me to heal myself physically and emotionally.

What are your secrets to keeping so fit? What gets you motivated to exercise?

No secrets. Years of studying diet and exercise. I count calories. I detox my environment and foods as much as possible. The quality of my calories are premium. I supplement with vitamins and minerals. When it comes to exercise, I have many different techniques I apply, but mainly variety and intensity keep me ripped when I need to be.

What’s it like training the contestants on The Biggest Loser? What are some of the challenges you face? How do the contestants inspire you?

It’s the most heartbreaking and the most meaningful job I could ever dream of having. I deal with all their physical and mental baggage — which can get VERY heavy physically and energetically. That said, when the contestants start to find themselves as the layers strip away, it is the most amazing and rewarding experience.

Your mini-workouts give us your secret to burning the most calories throughout the body. What is it? How does it work?

The secret it a combination of high intensity intervals, or timed bursts of intense cardio. Body weight training for lean ripped muscle that isn’t bulky. Peripheral heart action (PHA) to drive blood back and forth between the upper and lower body in order to maximize heart rate and shed fat. Compound movements and hybrid lifts that utilize multiple muscle groups simultaneously to burn as many calories as possible and promote functionality, i.e. a tight core. Metabolic training and plyo for fat shedding.

What kind of moves do these exercises incorporate?

Mostly body weight moves with variations.

Should we plan on supplementing these workouts with any other exercise? Changes in diet?

Diet is critical. You must count calories and avoid processed food in order to achieve the desired results fast. If you do the workouts, but you overeat and eat crap, then your body won’t gain, but you won’t lose either.

How often should we perform these exercises? How long until we see results?

Four times a week and within two weeks at the latest. You should notice a difference at the end of week one!

As always, remember to consult your physician if you are new to exercise.

Oscars Red Carpet Coverage

February 23rd, 2009 by Rebecca Harper Editor

Today Hulu got a recap of all the Oscars fashion with E!’s fashion cop, Debbie Matenopoulos. She’s the host of Fashion Police: The 2009 Academy Awards, which premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on E!. Her blow-by-blow account of her favorite looks — plus a few misses — is below.

“The Oscars were really fun last night. Everyone pulls out all the stops and it was really hard to find any real misses. But I did have some favorite looks. I love, love, loved Anne Hathaway in all those beautiful, big sequins. They had a fish scale effect that was reminiscent of Marion Cotillard’s dress from last year. From the sequins to the bodice and the strapless style, I thought it was lovely. I just love her look — it’s distinct, that pale skin and red lip.”

Taraji Henson, though, blew me away on the red carpet. She’s looked great all season, but this look took the cake. Her dress fit her perfectly and the detailing — it looked almost unfinished at the bottom of each layer, but it was very tailored. And she paired it with a gorgeous necklace. It was to die for, from that clutch right down to her shoes.”

Evan Rachel Wood looked great. She had a look that’s difficult to pull off, with pale skin, hair that’s the same color as her dress, and a lip that pops. It’s not something just anyone can pull together.”

“I loved Kate Winslet‘s hair last night — it was very futuristic, but I just felt it was not her best dress. She’s been on point the rest of the season. I think she raised the bar for herself this year, and I don’t think she lived up to my expectations this time.”

Vanessa Hudgens never looked better. Her dress was fun, elegant and fit well — it fit her personality. It was elegant and age appropriate.”

“I just didn’t like Jessica Biel’s look. I don’t know what she’s going through right now; we all have our own personal pain. But don’t take it on your fashion! It’s like she is having an identity crisis right before our eyes. The dress she wore — she tried to do Eva Longoria at the Golden Globes, but Jessica didn’t manage to wear it here. The apron at the front is popular right now, but in this case it was a trend gone wrong. And she wore open-toed black shoes that looked like Dyeables from David’s Bridal. They just didn’t match the white dress. And her hair and makeup looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. ”

“I could have done without the skullcap on Philip Seymour Hoffman. It’s rumored that he’s done something with his hair for a movie role and needed to cover it up. I get that, but why not wear a fedora or something?”

“On the other hand, Robert Downey, Jr., looked amazing. It was jarring to see him look so clean-cut. I’ve gotten used to him wearing funny glass, spiky hair or big bowties, but last night he looked youthful and rested. He looked 10 years younger.”

Sean Penn looked amazing. I loved the black on black on black. I think he had a diagonal stripe on his black tie. And [his wife] Robin Wright — wow! Sean won big even before the Oscars. They could easily have been the night’s best couple.”

Thanks to Debbie Matenopoulos for sharing her Oscars favorites. For highlights of the Hollywood’s biggest night, check out E!’s Best of 2009 Academy Awards Coverage featuring red carpet celebrity interviews.
